Description
Class Experience
This class is taught in English.
This camp provides an overview of significant historical events in U.S. History and also seeks to engage and even entertain Outschool students.
I am a former college instructor and have been teaching on outschool for over a year. I avoid sensationalism in the presentation of difficult or upsetting topics. I have taught student from 8 years old to college students, and I am a leader in local scout troop and have coached sports as well, so I have a range of experience with different learners.
Optional suggested readings are included above. All of my courses all use a youth history book as an outline and aim at a "Great Books" approach to learning history.
The ability to connect to kahoot quizzes. They work better on a second device but can be run from one laptop or desktop computer. Optional Reading List: Allen, Thomas B., and Cheryl Harness. George Washington: Spymaster. Washington, D.C.: National Geographic Society, 2007. Swanson, James L. Chasing Lincoln's Killer. New York: Scholastic Press, 2009. Sheinkin, Steve. Lincoln's Grave Robbers. 2018.
No grades will be given. The kahoot quizzes aim at retention of the material that has been presented.
9 hours 35 minutes per week in class, and no time outside of class.
The Lincoln assassination involves his death, and the last meeting involves a plot to steal his remains, but it not presented in an overly graphic way. Parents of sensitive learners should understand this ahead of time.
I will provide links for videos in the chat window and also a "To Learn More" slide after every class meeting to encourage the students to further learning.
