Class Experience

NOTE: This is a flexible schedule class. This means that this is a SELF-PACED COURSE and has NO LIVE MEETINGS. This allows for flexibility in convenience and pace of the learners as the learners can work at any time during the designated week and for the duration of the course. Written/Audio/Video feedback will be provided throughout the course via Outschool classroom or a private message.

This 4-week course is carefully designed for pre-schoolers to enable interaction and learning with fun, despite no live meetings. Since the attention span of the kids is low, the weekly videos are short and lively (with visuals - props or digital effects) to retain attention. The course runs weekly with the following themes:

WEEK 1: Cat (Billi)
WEEK 2: Boat (Kashti)
WEEK 3: Unicorns
WEEK 4: Monster (Bhoot)

Each week, Nearpod code [online lesson platform] will be posted on Outschool classroom on Mondays and Wednesdays @9am EST to keep the Urdu learning momentum going throughout the week. Kids are welcome to work at their convenient timings.

MONDAYS (Building Vocabulary): Interactive lesson plan is shared every Monday with a practice worksheet and a coloring sheet. The interactive lesson has games that allow for sufficient practice in different formats.

WEDNESDAYS (Educational Story Time): A weekly 'story-time' lesson is shared every Wednesday. Prompts and discussion questions within the lesson are included to build language skills along with critical thinking and analytical skills. For the discussion questions, kids can write or audio record (voice note) their thoughts or comments as they go along the lesson on Nearpod itself. This may be in English with use of some Urdu words already introduced, allowing kids to openly share their thoughts.

This class follows a bilingual approach to ensure inclusivity to Urdu beginners. Translations will be provided, therefore, kids are not expected to have prior Urdu exposure.

Nearpod link and guide is provided at the beginning of the course to help navigate the lesson. I encourage learners to upload their coloring pages under the Outschool comments to share their artwork and creativity with other learners.

If you have any questions, please feel free to message me.

Hello Outschoolers,

Thank you for stopping by! I am Annie, an educator by passion and profession. I’ve majored in Educational Leadership from McGill University, Canada, and I’ve been a teacher for 10 years in various capacities online as well as in-person in Pakistan, US, and Canada.

Born and raised in Pakistan, I am now based in Canada with my loving husband. Many great discoveries were accidental, so was my love for teaching Urdu.

Now, I find myself deeply into teaching Urdu as a Second Language, making Urdu more accessible and inclusive. My passion keeps on growing with each passing day. The same kids keep coming back to learn more, and that fuels my wish to make Urdu learning more fun, comfortable, and accessible.

This last one year has been the most promising for me. The Urdu Conversation 101 course (currently available for ages 5-8, and 9-13) has been taken by over 100 kids from 15 different countries. I can see the results of developing something with love and passion. This is the course that I developed and keep improving with each passing batch, incorporating learners' feedback and responses.

For me, teaching Urdu is a way for me to stay connected to my community, my home, and my self.

I’m so happy you joined me on my initiative to preserve our cultural roots with Urdu. Thank you for stopping by, and I hope that you choose to stay. 💫

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:

As an educator, I believe in empowering my students in class and creating an interactive environment for all students to learn effectively. I encourage my students to try different things and to not worry about making mistakes as I believe that mistakes are the best way to learn. My classes have an inclusive learning environment to ensure that no student is left out. I incorporate differentiation in my teaching practice because I believe that each student is unique and is at a different level of learning. I also encourage my students to share their thoughts and feelings as they like and I acknowledge their thoughts and feelings during the class as well.

____________________________ CLASS POLICIES ___________________________

SCHEDULE REQUEST: If you don't find a class scheduled at a time when you could attend, feel free to make a schedule request. Include months for which you're sharing availability as it helps me to schedule in advance and to consider your availability as I schedule sections.

LIMITED REFUND POLICY: My classes follow a "limited refund policy" which means that learners can withdraw with a refund up to a week before class starts, or within 24 hours of purchase. Except in these cases, refunds are not given. You can request transfers before the class starts.

CLASS NO SHOWS: As per Outschool policy, you are not entitled to an automatic refund for missing a section. However, if possible, I may post the class recording for the learner. If any questions or comments arise, learners are welcome to message me.

CLASS START TIME: My classes start at the scheduled time. If no learner shows up during the class, I will wait for 10 minutes before ending the meeting. Upon parents' request and at teachers' discretion, I will transfer the learners to another section upon mutual consent.

CLASS END TIME: My aim is to end the class close to the time scheduled. However, classes with low enrollments or with more talkative or expressive learners, class may end a few minutes over or under the scheduled time. If any learner has any commitment to leave on time, they may leave a message to me on zoom before leaving the meeting.

LATE TO CLASS: If a learner joins late, I will try my best to update the learner with what's being done during the class. However, for the best interests of all learners' time, I will not re-teach what has been missed. I will share the class recording in order to review the missed work. Learners are welcome to contact me with any questions, comments or concerns while they work on their missed work.

CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT: Most of my language classes involve communication. Therefore, I encourage all learners to keep themselves UNMUTED, except if they have background noise. If they do have background noise, I mute them in order for all learners to be able to listen well to the ongoing discussions. This enables timely discussions as I find many learners struggling with muting/unmuting themselves. As I believe in an inclusive and comfortable learning environment, learners in my classes are welcome to express their thoughts and feelings throughout the class time.
