Intermediate Level
Harry Potter is one of the most popular middle grade fantasy novels of this century. I can distinctly remember being in 6th grade when I finished the first book, and thinking that no other book would ever be worth reading until it's sequel was released (yep, I had to WAIT in between books, it was horrendous). My librarian tried to convince me to read something new - Redwall? The Hobbit? - but everything fell short of the amazing world JK Rowling created in Harry Potter. Next book (March 2025) - The Troubled Girls of Dragomir Academy by Anne Ursu This book club is inspired by that middle school version of myself, who could not imaging liking a fantasy book beyond Harry Potter. During this book club, we will explore new fantasy written for middle grade readers. Every 4 weeks, we will start a new fantasy novel to read and analyze. We will assign book club jobs to all our members, meet to discuss literary elements, assign the new characters we meet their Hogwarts Houses, and rate each book using "Magic Wands." Each class will be structured similarly, and students are encouraged to continue coming back every 4 weeks as we begin a new middle grade fantasy novel. General class structure: -Opening - getting to know you activity (sorting hat/Hogwarts houses, which magical animal are you, etc.) -Lesson/learning objective - introducing literary topic (theme, plot structure, characterization, etc) -Book club jobs - students present their assigned reading jobs -Book discussion and feedback - students share their questions, thoughts, and feedback on the new book. Comparisons to Harry Potter are welcome and encouraged.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to complete a novel independently (or with the help of an audio book)
Students will be able to track progress of a plot over several chapters to make inferences about the characters, setting, and theme.
