This ongoing class is for students who love creativity and hope to increase their creativity through mindfulness and yoga training (actors, musicians, dancers, painters - all are welcome here). This class is also for curious over-thinkers who feel the need to slow down their thoughts while learning fun facts about the brain. Most of all, I built this course to help creative students cope with stress and perfectionism. These exercises assist with decreasing fear and anxiety around the...

RELEVANT CERTIFICATIONS Department of Education, PK-12 Talented and Gifted Department of Education, K-8 Instructional Strategist I: Mild/Moderate RELEVANT EDUCATION Masters of Arts in Teaching Morningside College, Sioux City, IA As both a specialized reading teacher and TAG (talented and gifted) teacher, I have successfully integrated mindfulness techniques into my classes daily in order to foster playful creative energy and enhanced learning. Over the years, I have attended professional development classes on mindfulness and studied the role of mindfulness in schools. After years as a full-time musician (an endeavor I began as a teenager), I gravitated towards teaching and obtained a master’s degree with a focus on creativity and education. I have formally and informally studied the creative process, various theories in creativity research, the role of systemizing and empathizing in creative works, and mental health struggles among individuals with high potential. In addition, I've taught one-on-one guitar and song-writing classes for 10 years. During these sessions, I work with students and guide them not only with techniques but also with creativity. I love taking my knowledge of creative psychology and offering it to others in digestible pieces of information they can use.
Homework for this class is optional. However, ambitious students will walk away with several goals, exercises, and tasks for experimentation. If students are interested in reoccurring sessions, please come! I would be ecstatic to see similar students over longer periods of time for enhanced accountability and results.
-Students are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes, go barefoot, or wear socks with grips. -They should have a lot of room to move freely. -Students should also make sure their practice space is clear of objects (like toys or furniture that could be stepped on accidentally). -Feel free to bring a bottle of water to keep hydrated (nothing overly strenuous happens though). -A yoga mat is optional, but highly suggested. -If students wish to attend with some way to take notes (tablet, notebook, or whatever's their style), that's optional.
Informal assessment will be used throughout mindfulness coaching. Adjustments will be made based on the student's needs. These adjustments include decisions around goal-setting, advice offered (based on research), and optional next steps. Most of all, I hope students feel comfortable, encouraged, and ready to try out fun exercises in a low-key environment.
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
