Class Experience

Beginner Level
In this fun, casual workshop, we will learn how to create origami hearts using paper we have around the house. These hearts can be displayed in your windows for "heart hunters," or given as gifts! We will learn how to fold and cut any paper to create a square, and then we'll go through each step to fold the origami heart. Students will have the opportunity to chat with each other and share their work. I'll use a video I've made to show the steps, along with a "document camera" to demonstrate the steps in real time.
This particular origami is easy and forgiving, so it's great for beginners!
I will model patience for all class members as we wait for every participant to complete steps before we move on.
Growth mindset and resilience will be emphasized.
Students will be encouraged to fold slowly and carefully and to crease sharply; skills they can use in more complicated origami forms later on. Students don't need any prior experience to be successful in this workshop.
This is a great confidence booster for kids who have struggled with origami in the past, because it's easy and forgiving.

Learning Goals

Students will learn:
to create a square from any paper
to fold carefully and crisply
the vocabulary words: origami, crease, diagonal, middle, bone folder, precise, symmetrical, opposite, rotate, flip
to create a simple origami form: the heart
