Class Experience

In this 4-day camp, teens are introduced to less common art mediums and practices, and learners are challenged to create a different type of "unusual" artwork each day. This class also introduces teens to the practice of art critique and careful observation of the work of professional illustrators and artists.

The first class begins with examples of art using non-typical materials or unusual techniques. We discuss how the artist created it, and what makes the pieces interesting. Students engage in visual analysis of shape, color and composition.

After looking at professional examples, we challenge ourselves to create a piece of art in the same style! These challenges do not require advanced techniques; extensive experience in drawing or painting is not necessary. Materials and objects from the home are used. However, students need to spend about **1 hour outside of class**, for planning, executing and finishing their piece independently. Some of the challenges may require going outdoors, to use or photograph natural elements.

Each day students take a photo or short video of their finished artwork and post it in the classroom (videos are less than 15 seconds long). We begin the next day’s class by discussing each other’s work in an encouraging atmosphere. Overall, the focus is on fun and out-of-the-box thinking, so that students try out new ways to see, conceptualize, and execute art projects. We will also discuss how these projects might be used for advertisements, illustration or social media.

Day 1. Faces challenge
Day 2. Outline challenge with textures and backgrounds
Day 3. Food illustration challenge: children's art OR reimagined fruit
Day 4. Recreate a famous artwork

***Please read these NOTES!
(1) Cameras ON: Classes are interactive and work best when learners have their cameras on and engage directly with other learners and discuss the work created by their peers. However, if you have concerns about cameras being on, please message me directly.
(2) DATES: Please check the enrollment dates carefully; some camp weeks are M-Tu-W-Th, while some camp weeks are M-Tu-Th-F.
(3) Students should expect their daily challenges (homework) to take 30-60 minutes to complete, including taking a photo or video and submitting to the Classroom. There are 3 homework projects, one per day. (No homework after Day 4.)
(4) This class has a "Flexible" Refund Policy (the most flexible option): A full refund is granted if student officially withdraws before first class. If withdrawn after first class, a prorated refund is given based on the number of classes that have met. No refunds for absence or missed classes.
