In this course, students attempt to solve a 155-year old mystery of the Sultana Steamship which exploded on the Mississippi River while taking a ship full of Union soldiers back home. The cause of the explosion has remained a mystery. Was it an accident or a deliberate sabotage by the Confederacy? Students will assume the role of historical detectives in solving this mystery by analyzing primary and secondary sources and determining the reliability and accuracy of these sources. I have taught topics in social sciences for over 13 years to young audiences. Through my years of experience as well as credentialing courses, I am well equipped in bringing history topics to young audiences at age appropriate levels.

There is no assessment for this course. However, if students would like for me to grade and comment on their final product, they may send those to me for review and feedback.
1 hour 15 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Some students might be sensitive to the subject since it does discuss an explosion which killed a large number of people. However, the focus of the activity is not on the deaths itself, rather what caused the explosion.
We will refer to "Evaluating Conflicting Evidence" handout as well as "Sultana Evidence" handout
