If you are interested in learning to code but are unsure how to get started, then this boot camp is for you! Before young learners can begin to comprehend programming, they need to learn some basic skills. Through hands-on activities, this course will help your mind begin to think like a programmer without the use of technology. Obviously there will be the device we use for our zoom meeting, but everything else will be technology free. We will follow the format as outlined below: Introductions Teacher-led activity with student input and interaction Practice with the teacher using the provided activities/worksheets (There are handouts that will need to be printed for each day of this class. These will be posted on the classroom page 24 hours before class begins.) Day 1: Introduce key vocabulary and demonstrate the importance of doing things in the correct order by completing sequencing activities. Day 2: Practice moving objects to get to a set destination. Introduce directional arrows (parents will need to print arrows and place or tape them on the floor for this movement activity) Day 3: More practice with directional arrows Day 4: Students will practice drawing out a code using directional arrows. Coding is a key skill to help equip children for the future. Through coding, students will develop valuable skills in problem solving, creativity, perseverance and much more. This class is also offered as a one week class that meets 4 times a week. **Please note: The purpose of this class is to help get little minds thinking like a programmer before they begin to take block coding classes. We will not do block coding in this class. Parents are the best judge of their children’s abilities so please keep this in mind when enrolling. The age range is merely a suggestion. Some older students may still enjoy the class and some younger students may find it beneficial as well. This class is meant for students who do not have any prior coding experience.**

Supply List
Crayons or markers Pencil Handouts will need to be printed for each day of the camp. These will be posted to the classroom 24 hours before class begins. Students will need to bring a small toy or object that can fit into their hand on the 2nd week of camp. I suggest a hot wheels car or small toy figure to make this portion more fun and engaging for students, however, any small object will work.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Texas Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
I hold a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education and have 12 years of teaching experience. I spent three years teaching Kindergarten and nine years instructing 2nd grade, with three of those dedicated to virtual schooling. My teaching journey includes working in public schools and offering online classes to younger learners, even as young as two years old.
My main teaching focus is geared towards early education and lower elementary. I feel it is very beneficial to teach children to enjoy learning at a young age. This will hopefully continue with them as content becomes increasingly more difficult. My goal for teaching is make learning fun through using games, interactive activities, children's literature, and arts and crafts.
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, playing board games, reading and going on trips!
I look forward to meeting you soon!
