Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 8
This class is designed to answer the question why? For example: Why do I invert and multiply? Why do subtract when I do long division? Why does a number get smaller when you multiply it by a decimal or fraction?, etc. If students can understand why they do what they do when solving problems then they are more likely to be successful in Algebra and higher level maths. In order to be successful in this course students need to be familiar (they do not have to have mastered) with the following: integer, whole number, decimal, and fraction operations. Each week will explore 1 of the operations using inquiry based activities. Students will need to present their findings to their peers. This course will take students deeper than rote memorization and basic understanding. The objective of this course is to develop reasoning and application skills. Each week will follow the same format: Monday: A topic of exploration and directions for the video will be given to each learner. Wednesday: Learner videos/work need to be uploaded to the classroom. Friday: A follow up activity will be posted in the classroom. The structure and nature of this activity will be based off of the learners presentations. It will be a culmination of all that was learned during the week from their peers. Week One: Properties and Methods of addition Week Two: Properties and Methods of Multiplication Week Three: Properties and Methods of Subtraction Week Four: Properties and Methods of Division
