Average rating:4.8Number of reviews:(1,085)
A semester-long class that dives into the ideas, issues and events from the Reconstruction Era of the United States to the United States as it stands today

Class experience

I am a graduate of the University of California, Davis, where I received my BA in communication with a triple minor in English, history and writing. I hold a valid California single subject teaching credential in English, with a supplementary credential in social studies. Additionally, I have extensive experience learning and teaching about United States history at the middle and high school levels, and have training in Culturally Relevant Teaching, which allows me to empower students and help them gain deeper understandings of history by looking at the many different voices inherent in the history of the United States.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
History is not always comfortable. This class will deal with social issues and sensitive language that are a part of historical events. If and when sensitive conversations or topics are brought up during this course, we will not shy away from these topics. Instead will have an inclusive discussion about these events and issues in a way that both recognizes the diversity and backgrounds of students, as well as those of the marginalized groups that were/are involved in the events and issues. Additionally, we will inevitably be discussing various violent, unfair and uncomfortable events that have taken place during the history of the United States. However, information and photographs will be presented in an fact-based, age-appropriate way using primary resources and first hand accounts of people and groups involved. This class is intended for upper elementary and middle school students.
The information in this course will be sourced from Volume 1 of "The American Yawp," a free, online, collaboratively built American history textbook that has been written by over 300 historians. While “The American Yawp” is formatted as one textbook in two volumes, it is a really wonderful source because it isn’t written by one or two authors or even a small group of contributors. Instead, it has been written (and is continually updated) by hundreds of college level instructors, which allows it to “incorporate transnational perspectives, integrate diverse voices, recover narratives of resistance, and explore the complex process of cultural creation.”

In addition to "The American Yawp," this course will also source information archived in the Library of Congress, the research library that officially serves the United States Congress. We will mix in a variety of sources, including, but not limited to: books/printed material, maps, manuscripts, newspapers and periodicals, personal narratives, photos/prints/drawings, and video and audio recording clips.

The material for this class will be presented from an objective standpoint based on multiple viewpoints and perspectives that exist on many social, political, and historical issues. We will eliminate bias by consistently looking at multiple perspectives of the various historical events that we will learn about.
