This flexible-schedule class is part 6 to a multi-part exploration into the birth and development of America with focus on geography, economy, government, foreign affairs and the people who helped to shape the new nation. Throughout the course, an emphasis is placed on the development of social studies skills, critical thinking skills, geography skills and the multicultural nature of American society. As a flex class, we will not meet live! Each week will be a flexible schedule. We will study the following topics over the course of 5 weeks: Week 1-2: Civil Rights & the Hippie Movement Week 2: Post-Vietnam in the USA Week 3: Watergate Week 4: The Iran Hostage Situation Week 5: End of the Cold War, 1991 Students will demonstrate their learning through participation in the weekly classroom activities (no live meetings). *This is a flexible schedule class. Each lesson will be delivered via a prerecorded video that will be uploaded into the classroom every week. Each week, students will be assigned an activity to complete related to the prerecorded video. Each student will be required to comment on the activity postings each week, as directed by the activity, throughout the course in order to to develop a sense of community in the class. Additionally, FlipGrid will be used to promote further interaction, points of thinking, and webquests. The instructor will be available to help and will provide individual feedback throughout the course. Lessons will consist of some or all of the following: slides, a lecture, and community discussion (via the Outschool classroom), where students can ask questions and express thoughts, opinions, and anecdotes on each topic that occurs through the Outschool classroom posting area. By the end of the 5 weeks, students will: Demonstrate and strengthen abilities to present historical information. Strengthen note-taking skills. Compare/contrast/synthesize and analyze information. Exercise critical thinking and communication skills in formal and informal discussions.

In this lesson, we learn about the Iranian Hostage Crisis.

Parental Guidance
In this class, we will be learning about times in history that are sensitive or mature, such as racial discrimination, ethnic discrimination, communism, war, civil protest, the hippie movement, and other sensitive or mature historical topics from 1960 to 1991. It is advised that such topics will be accurately discussed in a kid-friendly manner.

All work will be completed in the Outschool classroom. No materials will need to be purchased.
