As Benjamin Franklin left the last meeting of the Constitutional Convention, a citizen asked him what type of government the men inside of Independence Hall had created. His reply was “A republic...if you can keep it.” Our government is dependent on the citizens of this country. In order to protect and maintain our government, we need to understand it and defend it. The Founding Fathers believed that an educated public was essential to the success of our democracy. The citizens of the US have the responsibility of understanding their government in order to protect and maintain it. American Government is a course designed to acquaint students with the origins, concepts, documents, and organization of the United States government with an in-depth look at the three branches of government. There is also a stress on citizens' roles and responsibilities in that system. This course will cover units on: Week 1: Ideals that influenced our Government Week 2: The Revolution and the Founding Week 3: Declaration of Independence Week 4: Passing Constitution Week 5: Federalists and Antifederalists Week 6: Executive Branch Week 7: Legislative Branch Week 8: Courts Week 9: Amendments Week 10: Amendments Week 11-12: Citizen in your community Citizenship and it's Responsibilities The course will introduce students to the major units by disseminating information, practicing and applying it so that students can not only be an informed citizen, but active participants in our government. It will be useful for students to have access to a copy of the Constitution, Declaration, and Bill of Rights at applicable times during the course. Teacher expertise and credentials
Social Studies Center started out with Laura Forde teaching as an individual on Outschool in 2016. She is a licensed Social Studies teacher with a BS in Social Studies Education and a MS in Educational Leadership who has taught since 2003 in both North Dakota, West Virginia and online. As Outschool grew, demand for her engaging, effective classes grew as well. Now an organization of qualified teachers continue to teach the content in a similar format and engagement.
We believe that students need to be engaged and involved in their learning. In our classes, we try to give the kids new information, have them practice it, and then apply it. We also believe it is important that what is learned in class is relevant to their own lives. Having student-centered learning and a tie to their lives helps students retain what they have learned. Our subject specialties are history, government, geography, criminal law, sociology, and other social studies classes.
We love the content we teach and believe that you are never too old to learn more. We continue to challenge ourselves through professional development, books/articles, and research to always be improving and to ensure your child is given the best learning experience we can possibly deliver.
