Class Experience

"Thomas and his little sister Birdie have spent their whole lives as slaves on a farm in Virginia. It’s a hard life, but at least they are together. But then one day, men come to take Thomas away, and Thomas realizes he has no choice: he and Birdie must escape to the North. With slave hunters on their trail, they rush into the dark forest, beginning a journey they hope will lead to freedom. But soon they are swept up into the bloodiest battle in American history: The Battle of Gettysburg." (From the back of the book)

I teach using the "I Survived" series because it allows students to learn about the events through the eyes of a child experiencing it. Students will be responsible for purchasing the book (the paper or electronic versions are great), and reading it throughout the 3 weeks of the class. Exact time depends on reading speed. They do not have to be at any specific chapter each week, simply finished with the book by the time we meet for the 3rd class.

We'll follow this general plan:
Week 1 - We'll talk about the Civil War, including when, where, and why the war happened.
Week 2 - We'll talk specifically about the Battle of Gettysburg. Students will have an opportunity to talk about what they have already read from the story.
Week 3 - This week will focus on the literature. We'll have some discussion about the book. Talk about identifying fact from fiction in what they read (we do this for all books). For this book, we'll focus on cause and effect as well as expand our knowledge of figurative language to include simile, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia, and hyperbole.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I believe that teachers who love teaching AND love learning themselves, teach children to love learning. As a homeschool mother of 4 (ages 7, 9, 13, and 16) my goals are to never stop learning myself and to teach my children to love the process of learning just as much as what they are learning. In the 8 years I've been homeschooling, I've taught at several different co-ops and a multitude of grades. I love working with the self directing students who love to jump right in to a new subject and the reluctant learners who need to understand how what they are learning applies to them to be motivated. I have a bachelors degree in computer information systems, have completed many additional classes in both history and literature, as well as workshops in teaching strategies for multiple ages and levels of learners. I look forward to working with your family!
