Unique Piano Class! Discover Comping / Chording on the Piano

This class introduces "comping" on the piano. Comping is an easy form of accompaniment focused on playing chords. It's a useful skill for any musician and is almost always overlooked in traditional piano lessons. It's also really fun!

Class Experience

This is a one-time class designed to pique interest in accompaniment-style chord playing in young piano players. We will go over how to build a basic triad (chord) on the piano and learn a set of four easy chords in root position.

We will learn that, because many songs use the same chord progressions, these four chords can accompany “Stand By Me” by Ben E King, “Baby” by Justin Bieber, “Just the Way You Are” by Bruno Mars, “Crockodile Rock” by Elton John, “Girl On Fire” by Alicia Keys, and many more. It’s like learning ten songs in one!

I will provide printable hand-outs before class, and after a brief explanation of chords and progressions, we will jump right in to discovering how to play our first chord progression.

This class is best for students who have already had at least 6 months or so of piano lessons. Those who have had less experience are welcome to join but will find it more difficult, and at least some piano experience is required. It’s also a great class for young piano players who like to sing and may want to learn how to accompany themselves or write their own music one day.

Parental Guidance
Parents are asked to look over all class materials before handing them over to the student. If students are provided song lyrics, make sure you are okay with the songs we are studying. I do my best to choose class-appropriate popular music, but everyone's threshold is different, so just let me know if you have any concerns. What works for a 14 year old may not work for a 9 year old, and I am happy to tailor the class to the individuals joining it!
Supply List
Students will need to have a piano or keyboard to play on, the printable sheets I have provided, and a pen or pencil.
