**Please take note: Your learner will be doing independent writing in this course. Your learner needs to be able to write independently and have experience developing ideas for stories! Correct spelling & grammar are NOT necessary for success in this class! This class is just about having fun being creative!** Do you love creating characters, drawing, AND writing??? Then this is the class for YOU! In this one time class, we will learn how to create a character and develop a plan for a creative story. Class Outline: At the beginning of class, students will brainstorm who they want their main character to be for their story. These characters might be unicorns, dragons, bears, mermaids, robots, monsters, and more! We will then design our character. Your learner will give their character a name and list a few character traits (which we will discuss in class). At the end of class, your learner will have a chance to draw their character with details from their story plan. After developing their character, we will then plan our story using a story planning graphic organizer. We will brainstorm different settings, problems, and solutions. We will also talk about the importance of a beginning, middle, and end of a story. We will learn that the beginning is where we introduce a character and the setting. The middle is where the problem is introduced, and the end is when the problem is solved. After brainstorming, students will be given time to work on planning their short story using a provided planning page. The teacher will be available for assistance as needed. Students will then be asked to share their planning pages if they would like. Sharing is never forced, only volunteered :) This class will only be a planning class. However, if time allows, we may possibly be able to start our final stories. If not, your students are encouraged to complete their final draft on a provided handout after class and share it on the class page for celebrations! Again, it is very important that your learner is able to write independently for this course, as it is a writing class. Correct spelling & grammar is NOT necessary!
Learning Goals
Students will use their creative skills to develop characters and improve their understanding of planning a story using story elements.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Callan, and I am so excited that you are here! I earned my Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus in Elementary Education from Texas A&M University. I am certified to teach early childhood through 6th grade in all subject areas. I also have an ESL certification (English as a Second Language) for grades K-6.
I taught 1st grade in the brick & mortar classroom for three years (all subject areas) before taking time off to travel for my husband's job. Being a classroom teacher allowed me to work with many different students with many different learning styles. I have taught students in small and large group settings, and I have learned many different techniques to create a safe, comfortable, and FUN learning environment. Since leaving the brick and mortar classroom, I have been looking for a way to get back to teaching, and I am so glad I came across Outschool! I hope that you will join me for one of my classes to say hello and to learn many fun things! See you there!!!
