In today's story time, the students will read Unicorn and Horse, by David Miles. After we read the story together, we will remember the story by doing a 'picture walk,' retell the story, and we will recreate their favorite part of the story with a Unicorn or Horse mask (their choice of which one to print) which will be provided. The students can put the mask on at the end of class if they choose to pretend to be Unicorn or Horse! Using the 4 R's strategy will foster better understanding and retention of the story. The 4 R's strategy is easy to use and can be easily adapted to different texts and stories. I will read the story using an animated voice, unless someone wants to volunteer to help me read! During our 'picture walk' to remember the story, I will choose a student to help me remember details from the beginning, one or two students to help me remember the middle details of the story, and someone new to help me remember the ending of the story. We will retell the story together. To end class, everyone can take turns to act out his/her own favorite part of the story to recreate a scene.
