In this one-time class, learners will understand the basics of topographic maps. This course covers why we use them, what the map symbols are used for, and hands-on practice identifying features on a real topographic map. This class will be presented with slides and lecture while doing hands-on activities with a pre-selected topographic map. Learners will be asked to identify the features and answer basic questions based on the knowledge they gain in class. Understanding how to read topographic maps is an important skill to have during emergency situations and in real-time for hobbies and projects related to construction or identifying natural resources such as water. No previous knowledge is necessary. This is a basic class designed for those learners who have never had the opportunity to experience reading a topographic map. I will upload the map into the class for you to print prior to the lesson. It is wise to have colored pencils and a magnifying glass handy for those hard to see features.
Learning Goals
Learners will be able to identify the basic map symbols on a topographic map and describe what they are used for.
