Social Studies

A class for inquisitive minds eager to explore current world events. Going beyond the headlines, it provides a comprehensive understanding of not just the “what” but more importantly, the “why” behind what's happening in the world today.

In this introductory class, students will share their thoughts on what they believe are the major issues in today’s world. I then provide insights and facilitate a brainstorming session on the historical factors behind these issues, with this class setting the stage for the deeper dives we will then do in subsequent sessions.

Introduction and Overview

This class will focus on the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Students will explore the current situation, key events, and historical factors, including the dissolution of the Soviet Union, NATO expansion, and regional politics that have contributed to this conflict.

The Russian-Ukraine Conflict

In this first part of our Middle East series, the class will cover key topics including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, historical roots, and recent developments. Students will gain a careful and objective understanding of the complex dynamics in this region. This is neither a "pro" Palestinian or Israeli class, but parents should note that there will be factual discussion of international law and breaches related to this. 

The Middle East - Part 1

Continuing from our previous class on this region, this session will delve into other significant issues in the Middle East, including the recent Syrian civil war, the role of regional powers like Iran and Saudi Arabia, and the impact of historical events like the Arab Spring.

The Middle East - Part 2

This class will explore China’s role in the South China Sea, including territorial disputes, maritime law, and the historical context of China’s rise as a global power. Students will analyze the geopolitical implications of these developments.

China and the South China Seas

Students will learn about the defense agreements the US has with the Philippines, Japan, and Taiwan. The class will cover the historical context of these agreements, current geopolitical tensions, and their significance in regional security.

This class will focus on North Korea, its political regime, nuclear ambitions, and historical context, including the Korean War and the division of Korea. Students will discuss the current state of affairs and international relations involving North Korea.

The session will examine the complex relationships between India, China, and Russia. Students will explore historical ties, economic cooperation, and current geopolitical tensions, with a focus on how these three powers interact on the global stage.

This class will cover the issues in Sudan and the Horn of Africa, including conflict, humanitarian crises, and climate challenges. Students will study the historical background of these conflicts and the role of colonialism, resource competition, and regional politics.

Our final class will address the broader issue of climate change and its impact on global conflicts. Students will explore how environmental challenges exacerbate geopolitical tensions, historical examples of climate-related conflicts, and the importance of international cooperation in addressing these issues.
