Class Experience

In this ongoing class, students will deepen their understanding of place value through representation of numbers in different ways.

We will spend the first few moments of class creating a community by getting to know one another, understanding class expectations, and discussing our learning target.

We will then move into a quick introduction/review of the different ways to represent numbers: standard form, visual representation (proof drawings and/or base ten blocks), and expanded form.

The majority of our lesson will be spent looking closely at numbers and representing them in the different ways. We will utilize a 4-square that includes the 3 different ways as well as a section to talk about how many we have in each place and what the value is. Students will be given a number in standard form, as a visual representation, in expanded form, or told how many in each place plus the value and then will need to show how to represent the number in the other 3 ways.

For example:
If learners are given 20+9=29 (expanded form), they will need to show the standard form of 29, a visual representation of 29, and share how many tens and ones are in 29 and what the value of those tens and ones are.

*Parents will be given a copy of this 4-square if you would like to print it off for your learner to use, but it is not a requirement! This can easily be done on a whiteboard or paper.

We'll close our lesson out by checking in with our learning target to ensure students have understood, and students will also do a self reflection on their effort throughout the lesson!

The class will follow the following schedule:
Week of September 11th - Numbers 10-14
Week of September 18th - Numbers 15-19
Week of September 25th - Numbers 20-24
