This course is focused on getting musicians, vocalists, instrumentalist, DJ's, electronic musicians more familiar to the world of music through understanding music without having to read music. We will be using free software and customized applications to learn how to write songs, compose music on computers, and/or improvise on your favorite instrument. Topics will include: Week 1: Tools and Software. Why do I need to understand music more? Where do Ideas come from? Naming the parts of music. Computer aided composition. Music vocabulary. Making noise from the very first day Week 2: Scale Degree, Melodic Intervals, Chords and Harmony, Rhythm and movement Week 3: Creative Melody and Spontaneous Improvisation methods, Song form and development Week 4: Structures, Textures, and Finishing projects The course will be interactive lectures with video content, slide, and improvisation games and weekly assignments. Students should be able to navigate a computer confidently and know how to install software and have headphones or computer speakers set up properly. No other musical experience in needed but is recommended.
Learning Goals
*Students will learn how to understand music theory without having to read music. We will use modern technology and concepts to help us hear and understand how music works without the need to play an instrument.
*For students that already play an instrument this course will also enhance your understanding of music concepts and improvisation and how they can apply it to their skill sets already.
*Students will learn how to use a computer to create and record music and develop ideas with a step by step learn method.
*Students will learn how to be more creative by tapping into their artistic potential through the art of music even if they've never played music before.,

I will provide all handouts and videos that accompany the class. We will use the audio recording and editing software called Reaper also known as a digital audio workstation (DAW) that is freely available for both Apple and Window platforms. Native Instruments 'Komplete' Start bundle of software instruments and sampler.
