Class Experience

Have you ever wondered how to properly analyze a poem? Each week we will take a look at a short poem then write an analysis of the poem. The first class will consist of a lecture that breaks down how to analyze poetry with myself writing an analysis live. Then, I will assign a poem each week that the learners will have to analyze. Then, in the following classes, the students will read their own analysis and we will end with myself giving my own analysis. This will be a decent amount of work outside of class in which the learners will not only have to read the poem but do some research. Looking at the author's life, the time in which the poem was read, and what other scholars have said about the poems. The homework will be explained in full once the posts are made for the homework.

Schedule
Week 1: Lecture on how to analyze poetry, live analysis.
Homework: Read "Snow" by David Berman, read the information provided on David Berman and the time which the poem was written in the classroom page, write an analysis for the poem (500-750 words)
Week 2: Go over the analyses of "Snow". Talk about what makes a good analysis of a poem.
Homework: Read "Mother to Son" by Langston Hughs, Read about Langston Hughs and the time in which the poem was written, write an analysis for the poem (500-750 words)
(this schedule will continue for the duration of the 6 week class)

Other Details

Parental Guidance
I will try to keep the poems appropriate for the age group but it would be okay if the parents wanted to look over content. I would be happy to accommodate if more than one parent felt as if the content was too advanced for their child.
Supply List
A journal or app in which the learners will write their analyses.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
I will provide all the reading materials via the classroom page. Each learner will need either a notebook or writing app in which they can type out there analysis. They will turn in their analysis to me via messaging the day before class or up to an hour beforehand.
