In this class we will explore how Local government works differently from State and Federal government. During our meeting time, we will talk about the different types of local governments, structure, and most importantly how things get done. Each student will have the chance to experience making decisions and navigating local government departments. Using real-life scenarios the class will role play as a member of local government decision-maker.
Learning Goals
Student will improve their understanding of how local government works which has the most impact on their everyday life. They will learn how local decisions are made on things like tax rates, zoning, public safety, and public works.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I'm offering this class to spark the creative interests students may have in getting involved in local government. I have had the experience of being involved in local government from a young age. As a senior in high school I was elected to our local Town Meeting and have continued my government service that time. I served for 20 years in Town Meeting and also as a member of the Finance Committee. I currently serve as an elected member of our local School Committee and as chair of the Finance & Operations Subcommittee and member of the Policy & Education Subcommittee.
