Description
Class Experience
Student will improve their understanding of how local government works which has the most impact on their everyday life. They will learn how local decisions are made on things like tax rates, zoning, public safety, and public works.
I'm offering this class to spark the creative interests students may have in getting involved in local government. I have had the experience of being involved in local government from a young age. As a senior in high school I was elected to our local Town Meeting and have continued my government service that time. I served for 20 years in Town Meeting and also as a member of the Finance Committee. I currently serve as an elected member of our local School Committee and as chair of the Finance & Operations Subcommittee and member of the Policy & Education Subcommittee.
No homework required. It would be helpful if each student could come to class with a story about a local government issue that is happening in their city/town for discussion.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
