Ready to dive deeply into that pesky "check engine light" and the concepts behind computer controlled vehicles? This course walks you through those concepts in a hands on fashion while building skills and providing tips for home auto diagnosis of common problems through reading of the OBD2 port. Class outline: Week 1: Basic concepts History of OBD2 Concepts of Computer Controlled Vehicles Capabilities of ODB2 Connecting an OBD2 reader to your vehicle Using an APP to read...
The goal is to learn how a computer control system operates a vehicle today, and how to utilize its data in diagnosis.
Early on in life I became fascinated by cars and the technology that makes them work. As a teenager I was tasked with maintaining the family business fleet of cars and trucks, which included diesels. I was rebuilding diesel injection pumps and tuning engines back in high school. This work/hobby has stayed with me through the decades as I maintained the understanding of the evolving technologies until today I maintain all my own farm equipment on my small farm. Couple the experience of how to do things with the deep understanding of how and why they work, and then add a unique ability to explain things in a easy to grasp way, and that describes this class.
Each week there will be encouragement to take a drive with the OBD2 reader installed in the car so that student can watch the data flowing in real time and equate what was learned to real life experience.
For hands on participation, each student will need: OBD2 reader such as: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DCHWP9P/ Smartphone, tablet or laptop with Bluetooth capability The Torque OBD2 reader app https://torque-bhp.com/wiki/Main_Page 1996 or newer vehicle with OBD2 port
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
