Middle school is a tumultuous time of change. Students in this age group are developmentally designed to "fit in" at any cost. Sometimes that cost is a lack of ability to really "see" others. The middle grade years are a critical time to bolster self esteem and build empathy. Reading a first hand account of the life of another is an effective and enjoyable way to do that. In this class, we will thoughtfully discuss historical elements of the period along with Anne Frank's diary. Anne was wise for her years and has much to share with growing children. Reading Anne's account of family life will show students that we are all more alike than different, as well as exposing them to the reality of The Holocaust. Students will be expected to read approximately 55 pages before each meeting. This reading will take around 1.5 hours for average readers. They will also be given a weekly vocabulary assignment. During their weekly reading, students should keep a reading journal with insights and questions that they can bring to class for discussion. Meeting One: Meet Anne Frank WWII and Hitler's Rise to Power (no reading is required prior to meeting one) Meeting Two: The Secret Annex Discuss 06/14/42 - 11/20/42 Vocabulary Meeting Three: Targets of the Third Reich Discuss 11/28/42 - 09/16/43 Vocabulary Meeting Four: The Final Solution Discuss 09/29/43 - 03/02/44 Vocabulary Meeting Five: Helpers of the Holocaust Discuss 03/04/44 - 04/28/44 Vocabulary Meeting Six: The End of the War Discuss 05/02/44 - Afterword Vocabulary
