Class Experience

This Critical Thinking Riddle class will be an 6 day class for those who love the challenge of figuring out riddles or mysteries. This is a follow up class to the previous, "Can You Solve the Mystery Riddle Class" but will upgrade the challenges of the riddle and will have more opportunities for learners to present their own riddles.

In this class several short stories or phrases will be presented to the learner in which they will ask only Yes or know question in order to solve the mystery. For example: "A man was lying unconscious near a rock in the dessert" The learner would have to ask "yes or no" questions in order to figure out who the man is and why he is lying unconscious near a rock. An example of a good question to ask is: "Did the rock make this man go unconscious?"

Dr. J will also present some short riddles that just have to be figured out without the yes or no question restriction.

This class will be interactive and a good opportunity to build communication and listening skills. The learners will use the process of elimination to come up with their answer. Learner will also have the opportunity to present their own appropriate riddles. Learners will also meet others and build friendships

The first part of class Dr. J will explain the riddles and discuss what are the best questions to ask and what kinds of questions not to ask. The second part is the presentation of the story and the learners question time. We will go until the mystery is solved. Dr. J may give hints if the learners get stuck. We will start with an easy riddle and move to more difficult riddles. The goal is to do at least 4 riddles in the 35 min time.

Learning Goals

1. To practice and expand critical thinking skills.
2. To learn to ask the right questions.
3. To develop good social skills.

Parental Guidance
Some of the riddles will be dealing with death or murder in a riddle format setting. They will not be real scenarios, but some children may find them difficult to conceptualize. Those who have experienced trauma or family/friends deaths may not want to think about these types of stories as they may bring up past memories that they may not be able to handle.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Robert Justis but I will go by Dr. J here on Outschool. I have college degrees up to a doctorate degree. I have taught students for over 30 years in various settings, mainly in brick and mortar school (all subjects but focusing on Science and History), and also home school, after school clubs, large group and one on one settings. I have also coached basketball and soccer teams. I believe that it is important for students to experience and discover the world around them so that they can be the person they were meant to be. My hobbies are fishing and kayaking. As a Outschool teacher I will be conducting classes on nature, basketball skills, fishing, and understanding culture.
