Class Experience

In this session, learners will learn about the parts of the ukulele, how to tune it and how to play the chords, F & C. Using these two chords, learners will practice performing a steady beat strum pattern and switching between the two chords without missing a beat. At the end of the session we will try to play some easy songs like "Ten in the Bed," "Brother John," or "There Once Was a Man Named Michael Finnegan".
If learners progress more quickly, I will introduce the down, down-up strum pattern as well as the chords C7 and G7.

Supply List
Learners will need their own ukulele and an electronic tuning aid like this one: https://www.amazon.com/JOYO-Guitar-Tuner-Electronic-Calibration/dp/B07YB5CC41/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=uku+tuner+joyo&qid=1594829826&sr=8-1

Beginning learners tend to over tighten the strings causing them to break. Therefore, parents of younger learners should help them tune up their strings right before class. During the session, I will teach them how to do this, but new strings go out of tune very easily until they "settle in" after being played regularly for a few weeks. Here is a quick video I made that demonstrates the process of Ukulele Tuning. https://youtu.be/vvoF-_dK_8U

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello Outschool Community!
I am Lois Parris, Music Educator for 27 years experience working with people of all ages from babies to adults. I'll save the list of my credentials for last in order to keep things more interesting.

My earliest family memories center on making music and reading stories with my brothers and parents as part of our family time each day. I believe this was the birth of my dual-passions for music and literacy. I feel that everyone needs to learn to make and respond to music from the day they are born because, in doing so, we learn to process our feelings and manage our impulses. In addition, Music is the Great Community Builder! Our first community is our family so it is natural to make music together.

I offer several different types of classes/courses for you. Included are be:
- a General Music Curriculum based on the National Music Standards for learners ages 5-11.
-Recorder Karate - a motivating method for students to learn to play a recorder while practicing music literacy skills.
-Small Group Ukulele - Learners play together to practice new chords and strum patterns.
-Reading fluency classes using nursery rhymes

Some other ideas I have include things like sing-along storytimes, digital music composition and stuffed animal sing-alongs.

Be sure to click the Heart in my profile to be notified when I schedule new classes.

I look forward to seeing your learners in my classroom!

Here are my credentials:
I am a North Carolina Licensed Music Educator for Grades Kindergarten through 12th grade with 20 years experience. In addition, I am certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards as an Accomplished Teacher in the area of Early Childhood Music (ages 3-12). I currently teach Music in a North Carolina Public Elementary school. As part of my work in the public schools, I have been trained in several literacy learning techniques. I also teach private beginning and intermediate piano lessons. In times gone by, I started and managed a public library-based literacy outreach for Preschools and Daycare providers which included story-time for children and literacy training for their teachers.
