Class Experience

This class emphasizes the enjoyment of learning the ukulele while sharing songs in a group setting. Students will perform a song they pick each week, then receive encouragement and constructive feedback from the teacher and classmates. This continues around "the circle" alternating between group and individual activities until all the students have had a chance to share.

New ukulele skills include chord shapes, rhythm, performance, strumming and picking techniques, the power of positive feedback, how to handle making a mistake and how to play though it, how to match vocal pitch with the chords, and how to overcome challenges and disappointments through effective practice habits.

I am very patient and energetic. I teach in a kind and supportive way, stressing the enjoyment of learning while building discipline and character in my students.

Beginners to advanced players are all welcome as they use their individual class time to work on songs at the level they are currently at. Beginners learn the basics of the ukulele over the first few weeks and graduate quickly into learning the songs they want to play! Session topics will be learner-directed as students choose the songs they want to play. Any challenges and instruction that arise are based on the song choice.

Learning Goals

Students will expand their knowledge of the ukulele in a setting of peers and with the help of a seasoned professional. They will learn how to become more confident performers. Other aspects of the ukulele are covered such as new strumming patterns, new chords and new songs. Guidance is also given by the teacher when a student is addressing a challenging aspect of the instrument.

Hi! I am Dave Christensen and I have been a music educator for over 2 decades. I have been teaching in the Burbank, CA area for 14 years, and now I am ready to bring my unique curriculum to the world! My small group classes create community ... musically! Students choose the tunes that they and their classmates will learn. These classes evolve organically, so no more predictable curriculum. Fun rubs elbows with musicianship and discipline in these courses where anything and everything can be explored. Any skill level from beginner to expert is welcome.
