Lessons follow a eight-step routine: Phonemic Awareness Visual Drill Auditory Drill Blending Drill New Concept Word Work Irregular Words Connected Text UFLI Foundations targets the following foundational reading skills: Phoneme blending and segmentation practice Accuracy and automaticity of grapheme-phoneme correspondences Decoding automaticity of words with previously learned concepts Explicit introduction of new concepts Decoding and encoding practice Reading and spelling irregular words Reading and spelling connected text
Learning Goals
Students will demonstrate foundational reading skills by accurately identifying and naming letters and sounds during an alphabet review, blending and segmenting longer decodable words, and recognizing and applying common digraphs (such as sh, ch, th, wh)

Students will recognize, decode, and spell words containing the short vowel sound /a/ as in "cat" and apply this knowledge to reading and writing simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words.

Students will recognize, decode, and spell words with the short vowel sound /i/ as in "pig," using CVC word patterns to build fluency in reading and writing.

Students will recognize, decode, and spell words with the short vowel sound /u/ as in "cup," using CVC word patterns to strengthen foundational reading and spelling skills.

Other Details
Learning Needs
The UFLI program is designed for early and struggling readers, particularly those who benefit from explicit, systematic phonics instruction. It is especially effective for learners with reading difficulties (dyslexia, ELL, ESE, Tier 2/3).
