"U" Pick Science Club - High School

In this ongoing class, students will be the driving factor behind most of the lessons by suggesting topics that they want to learn about, and I will design the class around those suggestions. I will also sprinkle in topics of my own.

Description

Class Experience

Students will learn to look at various science topics through a more decerning eye, yet at the same time learn to see things from "Outside the Box".
I have taught grades 7 - 12, and advanced students in grades 5 and 6 accelerated for two years. I have an Associate Degree in Marine Science with courses split between Biology, Chemistry, and Physical Oceanography, from the Southold Marine Science Center, part of Suffolk County Community College. My Bachelor's Degree is in Natural Science and Mathematics from Dowling College. I have a Master of Teaching Science in Earth Sciences with a Marine Science emphasis from Stony Brook University. And I have 32 credits towards a Ph.D. in Science Education from Stony Brook University. I have taught the following subjects at the high school level: Earth Science, Environmental Science, Marine Science, Astronomy, and also Independent Science Research, where students conducted authentic science projects ranging from water quality and invasive species monitoring to ballistics and DNA extraction. I have also completed workshops on such topics as Meteorology, RNA Interface, Barcode of Life, Building Underwater ROV's, and DNA Extraction and PCR.
No Homework will be assigned
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
We will discuss Climate Change, which can be a politically charged topic.
