Class Experience

In this ongoing, self-paced introduction to typing - keyboarding for Spanish speakers, students will have procedural knowledge of English spelling and build phonological awareness to support reading skills. This is accomplished via a structured program of phonics embedded within 24 keyboarding lessons of 31 modules each

The course starts with students learning to touch-type, read and spell the vowels - a , e , i , o , u. The audio track accompanies the letters as they appear on screen, reinforcing sound-letter correspondence, which is a crucial skill for sounding out words in reading. The student then receives their first score - and success! Our approach to touch typing / keyboarding is: First students must learn the proper techniques & ergonomics of typing, next we emphasize accuracy to create the muscle motor learning and last is speed. All students want to type fast, however the speed will develop as we learning the proper techniques and create muscle memory.

You can set up your computer in a “split-screen” format and toggle between Zoom and the browser with typing program OR you can use 2 devices (one for Zoom and the other for typing program).

Beginner Course Lessons Level 1 - 3
Level 1:
• Provides practice in combining, vowels and consonants into three letter words.

Levels 2 and 3:
• Uses consonant clusters combined with vowels to draw attention to the pattern
of sounds and graphemes in the target words. For those where pure synthetic
phonics has not been successful, this provides an additional aid to their
recognition through the grouping of similar words.

Intermeidate Course Lessons Level 4- 12
Levels 4 to 12:
• Students are introduced to the vowel digraphs, split digraphs and the simple
spelling rules of the English language. Digraphs are shown and spoken in
isolation and then as part of words.

Advanced Course Lessons Level 13 - 20

Levels 13 to 20:
• Include the less common spelling patterns and more complex spelling rules.
They also incorporate the rules for suffixing and prefixing and the structure
of syllables. The presentation is similar to that of the earlier levels, providing
repetition and overlearning so it is beneficial for those who find the
acquisition of literacy skills a challenge.

Levels 21 to 24:
• Include homophones, silent letters, countries, names and more advanced
suffixing and prefixing.
