Learn the basics of typing on the standard QWERTY keyboard - letters (lowercase and uppercase), numbers, spaces, shift key, punctuation - in order to type the alphabet, words, and sentences! In this 4-week (2 sessions per week) interactive class, learners will acquire important basic skills for typing on the computer keyboard and understanding the keyboard layout and how it functions. This class is intended for learners ages 5-7 who are typing/keyboard beginners and are ready to learn how to transfer their knowledge of the alphabet, words, and sentences from paper to the computer. Learners will have the opportunity to practice typing skills through interactive typing activities on the Boom Cards website, along with fun typing games! **NOTE: Everyone learns to type at their own unique pace and speed. Although learners will practice the same set of skills together each day and work on the same activities, some learners may complete the tasks faster or slower than others. This is a live class but it is individual student paced. This class is NOT intended to teach learners touch typing finger technique, but simply to build familiarity with keyboard structure. (Most 5-6 year olds do not have the fine motor skills to learn this technique.) If your learner is 7 years old and already comfortable with typing on a keyboard, please consider enrolling them in one of the typing classes for ages 7 and up in the Apples2Zippers organization! **WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS CLASS?: - Students with no computer keyboard experience (or very little) who want to learn the basics - Students with some keyboard experience who want to improve their skills and understanding **REQUIRED READING, WRITING, and COMPUTER SKILLS: - Able to use a computer mouse/trackpad - Recognize all 26 letters of the English alphabet (lowercase and uppercase) - Understand that letters are combined to form words, and words are combined to form sentences - Understand basic sentence structure - starts with uppercase letter, spaces between words, ends with punctuation mark - NOTE: It is NOT necessary for learners to be able to fluently read every word or sentence shown to them in this class. Images will appear on all typing pages to assist with understanding and the teacher will read each word/sentence aloud also. In each of the 8 class sessions, learners will be provided with a digital Boom Card deck with letters, words, and/or sentences to practice typing, tailored to that day’s lesson. The teacher will demonstrate how to login and navigate the Boom Cards website and type on each card in the deck. All login instructions for Boom Cards will be provided AFTER enrolling in the class. In addition to Boom Cards, various typing games from ABCya.com or other educational websites may be used to reinforce typing skills in each class (as time allows). **CLASS SESSION TOPICS: Lesson 1: Type the alphabet in A-Z order. Lesson 2: Type the alphabet in a randomized order. Lesson 3: Type words with only lowercase letters. Lesson 4: Practice more lowercase words. Learn the shift key and type single uppercase alphabet letters. Lesson 5: Type words with uppercase letters (ex: holidays, months, days of the week, people’s names). Lesson 6: Sentences intro- space bar, period key, first letter uppercase. Lesson 7: Practice typing more sentences. Lesson 8: Write sentences to answer questions about yourself. (Teacher will help with spelling and write sentences for students to copy.) Topics for words and sentences will vary based on the learners’ interests and the season of the year. Topics may include animals, colors, shapes, vehicles, familiar places, sports and other common activities, weather, seasons (spring, summer, fall, winter), and holidays (4th of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day). **TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS: - A laptop or desktop computer is REQUIRED for typing in this class. (No tablets, please!) - The teacher will create Boom Card accounts for the learners and provide login information that will apply to this class ONLY. **PARENTAL SUPERVISION REQUIRED: Students at this young age very often need adult assistance using a computer/keyboard. Since this is a virtual, online class, the teacher is obviously not present in the same room as the learner. The parent/guardian MUST be available during the entire class time to partner with the teacher and assist the learner as needed - setting up devices, logging in to Boom Cards, finding the location of letters and other keys on the keyboard, pressing the shift key, etc. Please expect to be at your learner’s side (off-camera) for the first 5-10 minutes of class to make sure they understand how to get started. If you see the learner is able to work independently with the teacher’s instructions, feel free to leave the room after 5-10 minutes. Please continue to be available in your home in case the learner needs to ask questions. PDF instructions will be sent to parents after enrolling explaining how to set up devices for the learner. Discover the basics of code by solving a variety of drag-and-drop block coding puzzles with fun, colorful characters to learn the coding skills of sequencing, loops/repeats, and events. NOTE to Parents: Students will need assistance set up their typing account. Instructions will be available upon enrollment. Our Goal is to get through all the letters of the alphabet in this beginner level. All students learn at their level of comfort and pace. Accuracy is most important at this level. Once the students have complete all of the beginner level, they can advance to the next class Level 2 Intermediate level, however it is possible that your learner will need to take another beginner section of this class to complete all lessons because it is self paced. Please note the minimum number of students required for this course. If the minimum number of students has not been reached, students may be transferred or refunded. Parents / Students will receive a message. Please check your email for Outschool messages, this includes Inbox, promotions, and spam folders. Teacher will wait in the classroom for 10 minutes on students to arrive.
Learning Goals
Students will learn proper keyboarding technique.
