Class Experience

During this FLEX course students will learn about the difference between therapy animals, emotional support animals and service animals. Students will learn through teacher led discussions posted in the classroom. I will give brief information about the laws and rules regarding each type of helper animal by doing a write up in the classroom.. After I provide this information I will ask the students various questions. Some of the questions that may be asked in the classroom include: What kind of animal do you think can be a therapy animal? What kind of animals do you think wouldn't make good therapy animals and why? What kind of tasks do you think a Service Dog can perform? I will also include small get to know you introduction questions, such as Do you have any animals? What kind? Please tell us about them.

Along with the interactive questions, I will personalize the class with videos and/or photos of my own personal therapy animals and service animal. I will post these in the classroom. Students will be encouraged to ask any questions they may have about my personal experience with therapy animals and service animals.

Week 1: Students will learn about what a therapy animal is, and what their legal rights are
Week 2: Students will learn about what an emotional support animal is and what their legal rights are
Week 3 &4: Students will learn about what a service animal is and what their legal rights are. Service animals have a lot more legal rights and requirements, ect so we will take two weeks to cover everything about them.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
The topic of mental health may briefly be discussed (such as depression and anxiety). I will not go into depth on this topic, but it may be mentioned during our discussion about emotional support animals. During our discussion about Service animals we will talk about various disabilities. Students are MORE than welcome to ask about my disability, as I have no problem discussing it with them. Some of the disabilities that may be brought up during the section of service animals are: deaf, blind, mobility issues, epilepsy, diabetes, ect. Videos are uploaded to you tube, they are set for kids, so there are no ads with the video. They are listed as unlisted so students will only be able to view them with the link listed in the classroom each week.
