Dr. Schmidt will explain how to use Question and Answer form of note-taking and the Cornell System of note-taking both in class and out of class. The class will be a live Zoom meeting in which I will first explain why these systems help and how to use them. Then, students will be given time to practice the systems on their own. Learners will be presented with these two systems; they will see examples from me; they will create their own notes using these systems, and there will be interactive activities to help them apply these note-taking systems to their own learning. Finally, students will be able to apply these systems to a class they are currently taking. There is NO experience required for this lesson. We will end with a fun review game to cement learning!
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to use the Question and Answer form of note-taking and the Cornell System in order to be more focused, more attentive and more engaged both in class and out of class. BOTH of these systems are designed to allow students to become confident, accountable learners. They move students from passive to active learners!
Students will learn how to use these systems to learn from both readings and class discussions/lectures. Finally, students will learn how to use these systems as effective ways to study for quizzes and tests.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Doctoral Degree in English Language and Literature from Cardinal Stritch University
Hello! I am currently a full-time college instructor. My areas of expertise include reading, writing, and study/learning skills. I currently teach Academic Survival Skills and College Literacy to college freshmen, and I teach developmental writing online to adults of various ages across the country. With my experience and education, I know that I can effectively prepare high school students for college level work and expectations. I also often teach students strategies for helping them succeed in their other college level courses.
I have knowledge and skills that allow me to help any student properly learn, absorb, and remember course information, so they can succeed and improve in all classes.
My style and belief of teaching is simple yet effective: I am a facilitator. I first explicitly teach strategies for reading, writing, time management, and studying. Then, I model how to perform each strategy. After this, I have students take their learned knowledge and apply it to their own courses. This is my strategy for success: explain, model, apply, and support.
For writing, I give incredible feedback for student growth. This includes specific, highly detailed feedback that looks at every word, every sentence, every paragraph, and every paper to ensure a well-structured, cohesive, professional writing piece. In addition, I offer students strategies to take with them to help them construct a paper of any kind.
I am excited to share my expertise to more students across the country.
If any of my courses are not offered at a time that you prefer, or if you would like a private session with me and your child, then feel free to message me. I am ALWAYS willing and able to make time for your child's success.
On my Etsy site, I am looking to take my expertise to share with the world! I firmly believe in the power of structured note-taking, so I am creating specialized/structured note-books that enhance students' concentration while reading and listening to lessons and that increase students' understanding and memory content.
Check out my first one for the Question and Answer system (my favorite note-taking system!).
