Class Experience

As an experienced teacher, I understand the importance of a high quality, engaging curriculum delivered with deep knowledge of both content and excellent teaching strategies. In this course, we will be developing a deep conceptual understanding of adding and subtracting two and three digit numbers. This content is delivered through best-practice teaching strategies and curriculum that is used in rigorous and high quality schools. The difference between this course and those offered at school is my commitment to high-energy and engaging lessons in small group environments. I will carefully observe student work to correct student misconceptions in real time, something that cannot be done through traditional online courses or textbook practice.This course aims to develop the skills of students so that they may become confident and proud mathematicians and scholars.  

I have multiple years of experience working with this age group, both as a classroom teacher and an interventionist working in small groups to address student weaknesses. I have 5 years of experience teaching math in a variety of school settings, both in the general classroom as well as in small group interventions. I love teaching math, especially in a way that develops deep knowledge of the content. In my master's program, I was able to learn about brain development and the science behind how a child's brain learns and understands math. I believe that deep understanding of the math, instead of tricks and shortcuts, helps students understand the 'why' behind their learning and makes future math easier and more intuitive to learn. 

Each class will be structured as follows:
 3 minutes of introduction
 7 minutes of fluency
10 minutes of a word problem that we work through together
5 minutes of concept development through direct teacher instruction
5 minutes of concept development through group discussion and call and response
10 minutes of concept development through independent work where the teacher watches students work and helps correct misconceptions. 
5 minutes of wrap-up and closure

Learning Goals

Session 1: Students will represent two digit numbers using pictures and/or manipulatives.
Session 2: Students will add two digit numbers without regrouping using number bonds, pictures, and/or manipulatives.
Session 3: Students will add two digit numbers with regrouping using number bonds, pictures, and/or manipulatives.
Session 4: Students will use developed skills of adding two digit numbers with regrouping to solve word problems.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hey learners! 

My name is Sean and I love exploring. I believe that learning and exploring are the same things. A bad teacher makes learning boring and hard, but a good teacher (hopefully me!) makes learning an exciting adventure. I taught in schools for 5 and a half years, trying my best to make students feel excited about coming to school every day. I am confident that students learn better when they are interested in the subject and the teacher is knowledgable and passionate about their work. 

Topics I love to teach on include math, nature and the outdoors, history, and really good books. It's so important to think about these things and many others with an equity lens, which means learning and talking about how many people in our world don't have a equal or fair chance to experience the same things you or I do. I love to teach, think, and talk about that as well, because I think it helps make the world a better place if we all work to improve our understanding of how our privileges shape who we are and how we experience the world. 

For fun, I love to go rock climbing. It's both a mental and physical challenge, like solving a really hard maze while simultaneously doing a really hard workout. It's a great way to destress and spend quality time with others in the outdoors!
