In this one-time course, students will be introduced to the beginnings of television advertisement, the changes throughout the years and the tricks advertisers use to get consumers to buy their product.
Class experience
Commercials are a part of everyday life, but let's look deeper into all the goods that catch our attention or make us laugh! The focus of this 55 minute course will be: What is the history of advertising and commercials on television? How have commercials changed in the way they are presented? What tactics do commercials use to 'trick' watchers? How will the future of commercials look different from the 1930's?? Appropriate 'banned' commercials...and why? Class will include discussion,...
Discussing history and the changes throughout time presents a bit of controversy. What was 'the norm' in some generations is looked upon incredulously in today's climate. There are light examples of sexism, gender-bias, representations of stereotypes of ethnic groups in early advertising. In this class, I will show the most appropriate of these examples. While it will be shown, the discussion will be around how advertising has changed with time and how advertisers now have rules and regulations that must be adhered to. Progress in society can be seen through many perspectives, and each opinion will be respected; however, if it seems to be leading to negativity then I will be redirecting conversations back to the main topics. Please note that I strive to keep content kid-friendly yet informative and true to the past.
