Description
Class Experience
Know the steps of the scientific method and develop an inquisitive mind!
I specialize in finding fun twists to standard curriculum to help my students build critical thinking skills as well as scientific reasoning skills. By adding a new twist to a familiar topic we can expand our thinking to include new possibilities. I have taught science to homeschool students for the last 15 years and during that time I have developed many teaching techniques and hands-on projects to help students explore concepts in new and exciting ways. I'm especially excited about this project because it gives students a safe and hands-on way to study the scientific method.
I listed daily tasks in the day-to-day breakdown. Mostly what I want students to do outside of class is look at the world around them and see other experiments they could conduct!
Note: I will post a document in the classroom that lists all of the materials so you won't need to continually refer to this page. Day 1: printed packet that I will post in the classroom, pencil Day 2: printed packet, pencil, scale to weigh gummy bears, ruler, 8 cups (they will be used overnight), water, at least 8 gummy bears, 1 Tbsp. each of salt, white sugar, lemon juice, vinegar, rubbing alcohol, and 2 other substances of student choice, to be chosen on day 1. These are usually things like soda, food coloring, juices around the home, or other easily obtainable things. Day 3: printed packet, pencil, wax paper or cling-wrap, gummy experiments that sat overnight, scale, ruler Day 4: printed packet, pencil, Google Sheets program Day 5: printed packet, pencil, printed graphs
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
- Google Sheets
I will monitor student work as it is completed. Answers will be discussed and monitored by me as we go.
4 hours 10 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
You may want to monitor your learner on the second day to make sure that things don't get too messy, but no harmful chemicals will be used in this project. Students should be able to use the family's scale before the second class begins.
