Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Let's check out some creepy crawlies and what math has to do with them! Things in nature happen for reasons. Mathematicians have studied spider webs and found several patterns explaining why webs have specific shapes and properties. In this class learners will follow along as I reveal these mysterious mathematical secrets of spiders and their webs. After I explain the math, learners will have the chance to create their own drawings of spider webs to show what they learned. The class will follow this structure:

~ Watch a slideshow as I explain a few geometry concepts
~ Draw notes to show understanding of the geometry concepts
~ Examine photographs of spider webs to see the application of these concepts
~ Watch a video showing a spider web being created, and pick out the math secrets we learned
~ Draw one or more spider webs using our geometry skills
Learning Goals
Students will learn that math can be found all around them and that things in nature follow patterns.

I specialize in finding fun twists to standard curriculum to help my students build critical thinking skills as well as mathematical knowledge. By adding a new twist to a familiar topic we can expand our thinking to include new possibilities. I have taught math to homeschool students for the last 16 years and during that time I have developed many teaching techniques and hands-on projects to help students explore concepts in new and exciting ways.
