A snowflake is a wonderful subject for a math lesson! Why are no two snowflakes alike? How do they all look so similar and yet so different? And what could geometry possibly have to do with those beautiful figures? Math is around us in nature all the time, we just need to know where to look. A snowflake has many different geometry concepts combined in its tiny figure. In this class I will lead learners on a discovery of what angles, symmetry, and fractals have to do with the way a snowflake looks by the time it reaches the ground. Learners will listen as I show a slideshow to explain the math concepts behind the snowflake, and then draw their own snowflakes as I explain how different conditions can create a variety of snowflakes.
Learning Goals
Learners will understand why hexagon shapes appear in snowflakes, what angles are in geometry, and how to create symmetry in a drawing.
Other Details
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Education from St. Cloud State University
I specialize in finding fun twists to standard curriculum to help my students build critical thinking skills as well as mathematical skills. By adding a new twist to a familiar topic we can expand our thinking to include new possibilities. I love finding fun applications for math in the real world. I want my students to see the beauty in numbers as well as nature.
