Twisted Figures: Explore the Geometry of Snowflakes
Class experience
US Grade 2 - 5
A snowflake is a wonderful subject for a math lesson! Why are no two snowflakes alike? How do they all look so similar and yet so different? And what could geometry possibly have to do with those beautiful figures? Math is around us in nature all the time, we just need to know where to look. A snowflake has many different geometry concepts combined in its tiny figure. In this class I will lead learners on a discovery of what angles, symmetry, and fractals have to do with the way a snowflake...
Learners will understand why hexagon shapes appear in snowflakes, what angles are in geometry, and how to create symmetry in a drawing.
I specialize in finding fun twists to standard curriculum to help my students build critical thinking skills as well as mathematical skills. By adding a new twist to a familiar topic we can expand our thinking to include new possibilities. I love finding fun applications for math in the real world. I want my students to see the beauty in numbers as well as nature.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Hi! I'm Kelly McGrath and I'm excited to help your child learn! I teach all core subjects but I add a special twist to each one. I want to help your child learn a new way to see the world, one class at a time. I believe that all children can...
