Twisted Chemistry: Explore the Explosive Science of Fireworks
In this one-time class learners will get some chemistry basics and learn how those ideas explain the way fireworks explode and create beautiful shows.
US Grade 2 - 5
Chemistry helps explain why so many things happen in our world! The reasons why fireworks fly, explode, and shimmer in bright colors all have to do with chemistry. In this class learners will explore chemistry basics such as atoms and elements, and learn specifically what those things have to do with fireworks. Learners will also look at the anatomy of a firework to better understand how they work. In this lesson students will participate in the following activities: ~ Listening to me as I...
This class is taught in English.
Students will know the parts of an atom and understand the importance of these parts in creating chemical reactions, such as fireworks.
I taught science to homeschool students in a community center for 16 years and during that time I developed many teaching techniques and hands-on projects to help students explore concepts in new and exciting ways. During that time I also tutored many public school students in chemistry, physics, and general sciences. I have also conducted extensive research and taken various courses to better familiarize myself with the basic pieces of chemistry. I have also taught chemistry classes on Outschool for the last year, specifically focusing on elements, atoms, and compounds. I specialize in finding fun twists to standard curriculum to help my students build critical thinking skills as well as scientific knowledge.
Assessments OfferedI will ask questions throughout the lesson and examine learners' drawings (as desired) and correct as needed.
Learners should bring the following materials: ~ 3 blank sheets of paper ~ a pencil ~ colors (crayons, colored pencils, or markers)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I will be talking about gunpowder in fireworks, so some student questions pertaining to firearms may arise. I will guide the conversation back to fireworks.
