Chemistry helps explain why so many things happen in our world! The reasons why fireworks fly, explode, and shimmer in bright colors all have to do with chemistry. In this class learners will explore chemistry basics such as atoms and elements, and learn specifically what those things have to do with fireworks. Learners will also look at the anatomy of a firework to better understand how they work. In this lesson students will participate in the following activities: ~ Listening to me as I explain some foundational pieces of chemistry ~ Drawing models of atoms to help visualize the way elements interact ~ Watching a slideshow to illustrate the ideas presented ~ Write simple notes to help remember how fireworks work (if desired) ~ Drawing and coloring their own fireworks to illustrate the elements that cause the colors ~ Discussing how understanding chemistry can help us make discoveries and better understand how the world works
Learning Goals
Students will know the parts of an atom and understand the importance of these parts in creating chemical reactions, such as fireworks.
Other Details
Parental Guidance

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Education from St. Cloud State University
I taught science to homeschool students in a community center for 16 years and during that time I developed many teaching techniques and hands-on projects to help students explore concepts in new and exciting ways. During that time I also tutored many public school students in chemistry, physics, and general sciences. I have also conducted extensive research and taken various courses to better familiarize myself with the basic pieces of chemistry. I have also taught chemistry classes on Outschool for the last year, specifically focusing on elements, atoms, and compounds. I specialize in finding fun twists to standard curriculum to help my students build critical thinking skills as well as scientific knowledge.
