Description

Class Experience

What I want to happen is for students to begin to look at novels in a critical manner and to look beneath the surface words. I would like for my students to leave this camp wanting to deeply examine the future novels they'll be reading, or even get inspiration for their own creative writing.
The readings assigned will be approximately 30 pages each day and the students will have at least 2 days to read the pages. It is the students' responsibility to arrive to class having read the pages assigned for that day. This means that on our second class meeting, I expect the student to already have their own copy of the novel and for the first two chapters to be read.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
The "Percy Jackson & The Olympians" series features children between the ages 12-16 participating in combat and fighting with each other and mythological creatures. There is also frequent references to the common knowledge that the children's god parents had affairs with their human parents (and occasionally affairs between the gods), resulting in their creation and birth. As these are a common tropes in Greek Mythology, it is to the parents' discretion if it is appropriate topics to read and possibly discuss in class meetings. If you're on the fence, I suggest reading the chapters with your child, or looking up parental reviews online, so you can firsthand understand how these topics are discussed (or sometimes are brushed over) by Riordan's writing.
Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
- any edition/version is suitable, just make sure it has the correct number of chapters to know it's the right text!
