Description

Class Experience

In this class we will be reading and discussing the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio. 

Each week students will be directed what chapters to read independently, and through ongoing discussions, we will highlight and discuss specific parts of the book that stood out. We will begin each meeting with a "What did you notice, what do you wonder?" prompt, and will allow student discussion. I will also be engaging students in strategic questions relating to the portion read.

I have led many, many book clubs for upper elementary aged students. This is one of my passions, and I love seeing how involved students get with the book characters and their own interpretation of what is happening.

Students will be assigned reading between classes, roughly 10-25 pages per week

The book, Wonder by R. J. Palacio. Target sells it for under $10, https://www.target.com/p/wonder-by-r-j-palacio-hardcover/-/A-13965248#lnk=sametab, or it can be borrowed from your local library. 
Notebook (any kind works, including a composition book) and writing utensil.

55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.

There are parts in the book that discuss crushes, physical deformity, and one part discusses a boy "peeing in the woods". A pet dies, and the emotions surrounding the event are discussed. 

The characters are 5th grade boys.
