Tutoring for middle school: 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th grade level math including prealgebra. I can quickly assess where the student is lacking and focus on those areas of their math. I explain a concept and then work practice problems.

Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Beginner Level
This is a 1-on-1 tutoring class for students in middle school, grades 5-8, including prealgebra. Topics covered are those typical for middle school math such as: fractions, order of operations, beginning geometry and shapes, graphing and coordinate systems and other topics. I can quickly assess a students strengths and weaknesses in their math knowledge. From there I can explain the material they are struggling with and help them master the concepts. We can also work practice or homework problems to increase their confidence.
Learning Goals
The student will learn their grade level math and master the material. They should be able to work problems independently with understanding.

Master's Degree from Texas A&M University
I love teaching about math and physics. I have a degree in engineering, but I have always enjoyed math and tutoring. I tutored math and physics in college and I am getting back into it after working as a Professional Engineer and then raising kids for a bit.

I have a few mindsets I approach teaching and tutoring with. The first is that everyone starts somewhere. Students struggle in different areas, and even with different topics of math, while they may excel in others. I always encourage my students that they can learn hard subjects and that we can work together to make them make sense. I also like to get to know a students learning style and teach based on their individual style. I can teach concepts from different perspectives to help a student understand well. I like to ask leading questions and guide a student through problem solving until they are comfortable working problems independently.

Even though this is Outschool, I firmly believe the best path to mastery of math and physics is two-fold: understanding the physical or visual concept, as well as practice. Practice will mean working and solving problems.

Some of my hobbies are kayaking, fishing, reading and gardening. I have two daughters and two kitties.
