Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 10
I know firsthand the frustrations many learners feel when they are assigned to write an essay. Trust me, I WILL make the process fun and painless. For over 20 years I have been teaching the writing process and have helped our school's writing scores become the best in our state. With the tools I will give the learner, he or she will become more confident and less frustrated in the writing process!

If a learner is already working on an essay, I will help them with the process. If the learner just wants to gain a better understanding of how to write essays, I will give that instruction as well.

Some of the things I will focus on are
1. Brainstorming topics
2. Creating an outline
3. Explaining the four types of attention-getters
4. Creating solid thesis statements
5. Writing good topic and concluding sentences
6. Showing students how to support their topic sentences with supporting evidence
7. Writing the concluding paragraph and wrap-up

If learners need help with MLA formatting, MLA citing (parenthetical or in-text), I will be thrilled to help in that area as well!

I will be constantly giving feedback, will give helpful handouts, and will do anything I can to make sure writing is not painful or feel like a chore! Learning my standard process for writing essays will truly help and take the stress out of writing.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their essay-writing skills, including how to organize their essay as well as write the three main parts: Introduction, body, and conclusion.

I have been teaching literature and writing to teens for over 25 years. I hold Bachelor’s Degrees in English, Writing, and Secondary Education, as well as a current teaching license. In 2005, I earned a Master’s Degree in Education and continue to take professional development courses annually to refine my teaching practices and stay current with educational trends and new teaching methods. Alongside my work with pre-teens and teens, I am also an English professor at the university level, where I teach writing and literature courses.

During my 21 years as a high school English teacher, I was proud to help our sophomore students consistently achieve the highest reading and writing scores in the state.
