Turning Pages Book Club: Howl's Moving Castle

In this four week class, we will read the book & spend time discussing literary devices, plots, world-building, and love of all things Diana Wynne Jones while reading Howl's Moving Castle and then compare to the anime movie by Studio Ghibli

Class experience

- Use of spoken and written language through activities for writing and speaking that emphasize persuasive, reflective, informative, and narrative communication
- Provides the student with an organizer for interpreting text (Character Analysis) and guided questions to support understanding and critical analysis
- Encourages discussion within and beyond the classroom about the specified text and invites similar exploration of the related novels
 3 files available upon enrollment
Teacher will provide handouts, selected recommended websites for activities and optional crafts associated with assigned reading. At the end of each session, I will supply the handouts and sites needed for the coming week. Parents are responsible for providing a copy of the book (Howl's Moving Castle) and printing expected handouts to be used in class. Parental guidance on each online tool:
- Youtube: This course uses Youtube in both live classes and via the Outschool Classroom platform. Outschool embeds the link on its platform so that learners remain on the Outschool platform and don’t access the YouTube website. 

- Go To Quiz: Character Quiz: During class, learners are encouraged to go to the site and take a character quiz that identifies which book character they most align with.

- BLOG: Sharon X Wong: Learners are directed to an article by Sharon X Wong discussing the merits of the poem featured in the novel.

- Goodreads: Learners are directed to the Goodreads site specific to the novel and others in it's series.

- IMDb: Parents are provided with an IMDb link to the direct film the learners are encouraged to view at the end of the course.

- Studio Ghibli Park - Japan: Ghibli Park is a theme park in Nagakute, Aichi, Japan based on the worlds created in Studio Ghibli movies.

I believe that teaching can be useful but only if it is also fun- boring classes are not allowed and there is nothing worse than being bored (this is why I heavily encourage interaction in e-learning)!
