It is a magical world full of unknown possibilities and together we will explore it using character mapping, discussions of literary devices such as foreshadowing, and overarching themes found in the literature. Students will read the book and dive into the world of Lyra and her Golden Compass using discussions, worksheets, and out-of-class activities to gain a deeper understanding of the book. Activities and discussions will be based on the set of chapters assigned that week. Parents:...

In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Parents need to expect that this action-packed fantasy trilogy may feel threatening to younger children. Animals and kids are in constant peril, and younger readers may be upset by the threatened separation between the animals (daemons) and their humans. Like many novels featuring young adults, the actual adults in this novel oftentimes are trying to hurt the young heroes. There are some who find conflict with the role of religion in the novels. While the author does not specify what the religion in this fictional world specifically is, he does describe the main society of this fictional world as being based on that religion and corrupt government practices. While the course does discuss corrupt governments within the novel, no discussion concerning real-world religion will be covered in this course. Parental guidance on each online tool: - Youtube: This course uses Youtube in both live classes and via the Outschool Classroom platform. Outschool embeds the link on its platform so that learners remain on the Outschool platform and don’t access the YouTube website. - Author Site: This course uses the Philip Pullman author site for various activities both in live classes and via the Outschool Classroom platform. This site does not require logging in to participate in the activities.
I believe that teaching can be useful but only if it is also fun- boring classes are not allowed and there is nothing worse than being bored (this is why I heavily encourage interaction in e-learning)! Expect to enjoy classes about Harry Potter,...
