Class Experience

Students will learn from a professional stylist all there is to know about styling their hair using curling irons, wands, and straighteners.
We’ll discuss safety using electricity and learn how to use hot tools properly to prevent burning or damage to our hair.
I will review three different methods for curling hair and demonstrate the effects each method achieves. We’ll discuss terminology and style secrets like barrel size and preventing hair damage.
Students will also see a demonstration of a hair straightener used for both straightening and adding curls or waves. I will demonstrate these methods on a mannequin and students will have the opportunity to ask questions and interact with me and their classmates.
Using their new knowledge, students will be encouraged to style their hair under my guidance, with feedback and tips offered as we go.
Students will get the most out of this class if they come prepared to style their hair in class, but this is not a requirement. Students may also practice styling on a mannequin or on themselves outside of class.
We’ll discuss hair type, face shape, and hair length, and all discussions will be focused around loving the hair we have. This course is designed to not encourage negative self-talk about one’s own hair or appearance.
Students in this class will use hot, electric tools for class. Before enrolling, please ensure your learner is ready to use these tools on their own. This class is meant to help students learn how to style their own hair, so I ask that no friends or siblings join as a “practice model”. This class is inclusive of ethnicity, gender, and hair textures and lengths.

Students out of the age range listed may be enrolled in class on a case by case basis. If your learner is out of the age range I will do my best to place them in a section that has students close to their age.

Learning Goals

Students will learn how to style their hair using hot tools (curling irons, wands, and straighteners). They’ll learn proper safety, differences in stying techniques, and have the opportunity to ask questions to a professional stylist.
They will practice the styling techniques on their own hair to achieve a new hairstyle.

Parental Guidance
This class will demonstrate the use of electric hair curlers and hair straighteners, so students must be able to practice caution when using these. Incorrect use or failure to practice caution can result in burning or damage to hair. We will discuss safety with hot tools as well as the use of electricity around water sources and prioritize safety at all times. A parent or guardian should be close by during this last class.
Supply List
The following are required to participate in the lesson. You do not need all three hot tools; it’s okay if you only have one of the three listed. If you have all three, pick one that you’re most interested in learning about.
- Curling iron
- Curling wand
- Straightener/“flat iron”
- Hair brush
- Pony tail holders
- Hair pins (optional)
- Hair spray (optional)
- Heat protectant spray (optional)
