Class Experience

Love bugs? Nature? Learning about wildlife? In this class students will learn all about what it's like to be a jumping spider. (By being turned into one!) It the perfect class for bug loving learners. Jumping spiders are the largest family of spider and can be found all over the world! They are very unique from other spiders and make for a fascinating subject of study.

This class will cover jumping spider morphology, taxonomy, how and when they sleep, their nests and where to find them, how they get around, what it's like to have their vision and other senses you may not expect, what they eat and how they hunt, molting, and even spider poop!

This class uses imagination, visualization, movement, interactive activities, reflective questions, games, and humor to bring this subject to life.

The class will begin with a short conversation about spiders where we will talk about what we already know about spiders, how we feel about spiders, and what we think it will be like to be a spider. (No prior knowledge is required!) Students will learn all about the different body parts of jumping spiders and what makes them so unique. Then we will find out more about how scientists categorize jumping spiders and the kids will create their very own species. Then it will be time to get turned into one to find out for ourselves what it is actually like to walk in their shoes. (All 8 of them!) Students will be engaged in an interactive presentation that will introduce them to their new spider bodies and what they can do, walk them through the parts of a jumping spider's day, and provide some bonus fun facts and games. Afterwards students will be turned back into kids and take the "get moving" jumping spider quiz. Time allowing, they will also get to discuss their experience of being jumping spiders while they work on a fun craft.

Students will also receive an packet or materials they will print out for class and be able to complete after the class to reinforce what they have learned and build on their interest.

Learning Goals

Students will come away understanding what a day in the life of a jumping spider is like. They will learn about their anatomy, taxonomy, how they perceive the world, what they eat, where they live, and more. Ultimately my goal is to help learners develop a deeper appreciation and awareness of these adorable arachnids.
