Your Final Grade will be determined from your homework grades, project grades, and test grades. Projects grading rubrics will be provided with the assignment. Assignments, papers, projects, and tests will have due dates and late assignments will receive a deduction. Accommodations and extensions can be given when asked for before the due date. This class uses the Moving Beyond the Page Language Arts curriculum. As such learners will use literature to learn language arts, develop their critical thinking and creativity skills, and use the 6+1 traits of writing approach (Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions, Presentations). A Summary of Skills will be provided when you enroll that tells you which state and national (US) standards that each unit covers for your own planning and any documentation requirements that you need to submit to your local authorities. Tuck Everlasting Unit - Winnie has lived a life of privilege and security. Everything changes when she meets the Tucks. The Tucks never grow old, even as the world around them moves on. Winnie is faced with the challenge of risking everything to save the family she has come to love. In this unit children explore myths and legends of "magical waters", recognize the author’s use of effective personification, and are asked to design a marketing campaign. Children practice identifying and labeling parts of speech and write a cause and effect paragraph. Week 1 - Learners will begin reading and discussing Tuck Everlasting. They will learn about Natalie Babbitt (author), vocabulary words, identifying parts of speech, make parts of speech flash cards, identifying prepositions, and settings. Week 2 - Learners will continue reading and discussing Tuck Everlasting. They will learn about adverbs, verbs, adjectives, personification, discuss life changes, the importance of water in the story and groundwater, and discuss life cycles. Week 3 - Learners will continue reading and discussing Tuck Everlasting. They will learn about adjectives and pronouns, juxtaposition, themes (cycles and changes), similes, metaphors, new vocabulary words, coordinating conjunctions and subordinating conjunctions, and write an ad. Week 4 - Learners will continue reading and discussing Tuck Everlasting. They will learn about cause and effect, write a paragraph, read about and compare myths and legends about water, review the parts of speech, symbols and similes, and create an art project with a quote from the book. Bonus Activity: They may watch the Tuck Everlasting movie (homework) to compare and contrast with the book.

Parental Guidance
Outside sources may be referenced/used in the class for homework. Students will be referred to the Google Suite when it comes to some assignments, but they are welcome to use any word processor, slideshow presentation software, etc. that they normally use. Google suites does require a google email address to use, but students do not need to create their own account and are welcome to use their parents email address for the purpose of this class.
Students will use Google Slides in class (and homework) to create a vocabulary picture dictionary.
Tuck Everlasting has some moderate violence, an abduction of a female character, and a character dies.
Supply List
Students will need a word processor to write paper assignments, a journal/notebook/google doc is recommended for journaling thoughts and extra/non-workbook assignments, a printer to print up the workbook pages or pdf editor to do them on their computer, and a cell phone with a camera or scanner to turn in workbook pages. Students will make flash cards on the first day of class. They can create these digitally, on index cards, or blank paper. Families will need to purchase the Moving Beyond the Page student activity pages to download. Direct links to purchase the student activity pages will be provided after enrollment.
