Description
Class Experience
Students will learn to find their voice through discussion, learn about history in a fun way, learn about different issues of justice, and find others who enjoy their interests.
I love true crime! It has been an interest of mine all my life - I am an avid consumer of true crime books, podcasts, and TV. In my professional life, I have studied some true crimes in the past through work as a paleopathologist. I love working with kids who are passionate about any topic!
Before each class, I would like them to do a little background research on the case to become familiar with it for each class. We will still go over the basics at the beginning of each class, so if they do not have time that is fine as well, as long as they contribute to the discussion in a positive way!
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Obviously, crime is an extremely sensitive topic. Since this is for a younger age group, I will not be selecting any particularly brutal or violent crimes to discuss. However, we will be discussing murder and other crimes. Weekly topics can be found in the description. It is the parent's responsibility to determine if the crime for that week is appropriate for their child. We will do check-ins and take off-topic breaks when things get heavy, but ultimately monitoring of the learner's mental health is up to their parent. I recommend you discuss this with your learner and make sure they have access to the appropriate resources to stay mentally healthy during and outside our discussion. Additionally, this is not a highly serious class. We make jokes and keep things light while discussing our topics, but do not laugh at the victims or what they went through. This may be inappropriate for some students. It is the parent's responsibility to determine if this class is suitable for their child.
