Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Each session will include:
A warm-up problem set to review easy multiplication facts like 2, 5, and 10 while settling in at the beginning of class
Demonstration and practice of a strategy for calculating multiplication facts for calculating the table of the week, which will rotate between sixes, sevens, eights, and nines
Fluency practice using a game, such as Nearpod's Time to Climb, targeting the table of the week
Non-routine practice for which tricky times tables are a step

Depending on the week, non-routine practice may include situational problems, multi-digit multiplication, division, combinatorics such as factorials and permutations, number theory, fractions, and other multiplication-related topics.

Operations will rotate as follows:
First week of each month: 6
Second week of each month: 7
Third week of each month: 8
Fourth week of each month: 9
Fifth week, when applicable: Mixed practice

Weeks are numbered based on their Mondays, and weekends are grouped with the previous week. For example, May 2022 will be divided as follows:
Sunday May 1: Week 4 of April
Monday May 2-Sunday May 8: Week 1 of May
Monday May 9-Sunday May 15: Week 2 of May
Monday May 16-Sunday May 22: Week 3 of May
Monday May 23-Sunday May 29: Week 4 of May
Monday May 30-Sunday June 5: Week 5 of May
Learning Goals
Learners will practice toward fluency with multiplication facts involving 6, 7, 8, and 9.
Learners will calculate products and quotients of multi-digit numbers involving 6, 7, 8, and 9.

Parental Guidance
Nearpod is a site for educational group use which supports shared activities like slideshows, games, quizzes, and drawing. Learners access the session’s activities through a custom link – no account is needed.
Supply List
Students should be prepared with whatever tools they would usually use for multiplication, like scratch paper and a pencil, a handheld whiteboard and marker, abacus, countable objects, etc. We are focusing on recall fluency in this class, so calculators should not be used except during non-routine problems.

Hello mathematicians, puzzlers, and other curious people!

I'm a homeschool graduate, math professor, textile/sewing enthusiast, literary hobbyist, and general curious individual, here to share all of the above with the next generation. Math classes that are helpful and understandable, instead of just trying to figure it out for yourself from a book, are my main focus — I believe deep, confident understanding of math is for everybody.

I'm in US Central Time but flexible as to time zones. If you need a class offered at an international friendly time, just ask!

Want to start class already knowing a classmate? Or, do you just like getting deals? With my Bring-a-Friend discount, you can tell a friend to sign up and tell me who sent them, and you'll both get 25% off (processed manually through the refund system). You can bring more than one friend and get more than one discount — if you bring four friends, you get the class for free!

A few testimonials, in my students' own words:

I needed some help to knock out a 6 week Summer Business Calc class after not doing any math for over 20 years. Avrila worked with my schedule and demonstrated expert level knowledge of the subject matter in every lesson. Whether helping me construct equations from cryptic setups, develop test strategies, or just review the standard limit or calculus rules to complete problems, Avrila always knew what was required and gave me just enough information to figure things out for myself. I can not recommend her highly enough!

She explains things so well and walks you through topics step by step. She is extremely patient and super nice!

Avrila is awesome! She is extremely knowledgeable and flexible with my busy schedule. She explains these concepts in a super simple way making it much easier to understand. She helped me get through the majority of my semester, helping me improve my GPA more than I ever had hoped. I highly recommend her for any of your tutoring needs regarding stats.
